Neville Goddard Lectures: “All Dreams Proceed From God”
20 Dec Neville Goddard Lectures: “All Dreams Proceed From God”
11/24/69
The Bible recognizes one source of dreams: all dreams proceed from God. In the 33rd chapter of the Book of Job we are told that God speaks to man in two ways, but man does not perceive it. Then it states the two ways: “In a dream and a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while they slumber on their beds; then he opens the ears of men and seals their instruction” (33:14). Now, you tell that to a psychiatrist, he will think you are insane. He will tell you that all dreams are from the individual dreamer, because he separates the dreamer from God. He does not understand what you are talking about. God’s eternal name is I AM, so who is dreaming? Well, I am…well, that’s God…that’s his name forever and forever. So I’m not separating the dreamer from God.
All dreams proceed from God. Some are simple and you need no interpreter; others are revealed in a symbolic language which is not understood and then you need the interpreter. As told us in the story of Joseph, who could take the story of the butler and the baker, and even Pharaoh himself, and interpret their dreams for them and it came to pass just as he interpreted it (Gen.40:8). The cue is given as to who he really is when they said, “We have had a dream that’s why we are disturbed,” because he looked upon their faces and they seemed so disturbed. Then he said to them, “Only God can interpret the dream. Tell it to me, I pray you.” If only God could interpret the dream, then why tell it to him? But you see he is a personification of God. His name was changed from Joseph, which really is Hosea—which means “salvation”—to Joshua; and Joshua is the Hebraic from of the Anglicized Jesus, which means “Jehovah is salvation.” So he’s telling you “Tell it to me, I will interpret it for you.” So he tells you who he is.
Now here, the year is 1954, the month is November, November the 28th, and waking from a dream I heard the words, “You do not move in waking any more than you move on your bed in sleep. It is all a movement of mind. And the intensity is determined by the strength of the vortex you create. This is just like a whirlwind with a center of perfect stillness. You only believe that you are moving when you are awake as you think you believe in sleep.” Well, I’m a rational being as you are and so reason could not accept that, but I wrote it down and placed it where I place all these visions in my Bible waiting for a future revelation that would in some way illuminate it, explain it. But I wrote it down…it came from God. Yes, psychiatrists will say it came from yourself and I’m not denying that. It came from a level, a depth of my own being that my rational mind could not reach; but I wrote it down just as it came, waiting for some future revelation that would explain it. How on earth could that be explained to the reasonable mind?
Today our three boys returned from the moon, a trip of a half-million miles. We have the record. You and I came here tonight in our cars…a friend of mine brought me here, I can’t deny that. I travel all over the world. I travel so much on earth. I have travelled in my dreams. Like Blake said, “I have traveled through a land of men, a land of men and women, too, and heard and seen such dreadful things as cold earth wanderers never knew” (The Mental Traveler) and then he describes this travel. Well, I travel, you travel, and here I can’t go back on what I heard, I wrote it down. You mean that I’ve never really traveled save in a dream…that this is no more than a dream? For when I woke in the morning I must confess I was still on the bed on which I fell asleep. I know I did not physically leave my room. I did not physically leave my bed, yet I heard these words. And night after night I sleep on a bed. I do not leave the bed ‘til I wake in the morning, and yet I travel. You mean this waking state is no more than a dream and there is a dreamer dreaming in the depths of my being that looks upon this as a dream, just as I at night on a little lower level of the dream wake to find I didn’t really leave the bed?
